April 12th, 2009: Head Of Wantastiquet / Duncan / TG / Captain Kursk

I’m so late this is gonna be more about the links than anything else. Nothing exceptional but each was cool enough to be worth checking out again. The place is pretty cool, tucked away in a courtyard out of sight from the street.
I’m not sure I would have liked Captain Kursk on his own much, but with another guy on electric guitar it turned out pretty nice, probably moving him just enough away from regular folish sounds. As it was there was enough twists on that scheme to keep me interested.
I still like TG better on guitar, but his set was actually pretty close to the layers of rich feedback he can put out that way. The sound is different, but the evocative power was there and I really liked the set. Was it really very short or was that an impression arising out my liking it a lot?
After a transition which felt more like a part of TG’s set in a way, Duncan pulled out a very nice set. Sometimes I feel his playing can get too elaborate and pretty, but definitely not this time, it felt charged somehow. Even though there was no wails of feedback and it was not that fast, I kept thinking about Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation. It doesn’t make much sense to me either. But that’s a pretty sign that I liked the set.
Head of Wantastiquet is actually a guy I’ve always appreciated a lot when he showed up as part of Sunburned Hand of the Man, so I was expecting something different. Turned out to be a quiet folkish set. The opening part with a banjo and a bow was more interesting for me, but I was actually getting more into it as the set ended. Another short one, but that one left me not exactly disappointed, more like thinking I should have got rid of my expectations quicker.
